The Chartered College of Teaching will work alongside Being Luminary and Chiltern Learning Trust, and the National Institute of Teaching will be working with Mindful Equity UK and Now Teach, to test solutions focused on Initial Teacher Training and recruitment practices.

Despite being overrepresented among applicants for teacher training, people from ethnic minority backgrounds are considerably underrepresented in teaching. That’s why in February this year, building on our previous work with Teach First and NFER, we opened applications for the Diversity in Education Fund, to support diverse teachers and build a more inclusive education system – which is a key priority area of Mission 44’s Nothing Happens in Isolation campaign, to prevent unnecessary school exclusions.

Today, we’re announcing that over the next four years we’ll be working with six fantastic organisations to increase the representation of ethnically diverse teachers at the recruitment and selection stage. To align with Mission 44’s values, and foster an environment of collaboration, each partnership has representation from organisations with lived experience of the diverse teacher recruitment issue, including grassroots and POC-led organisations.

This partnership focuses on School Centred Initial Teacher Training providers (SCITTs) across England and will:

  • Train ethnic minority Chartered College of Teaching Fellows who have expertise in teacher development to act as coaches for ITT providers.
  • Develop a programme of training for SCITT staff and for induction tutors, mentors, leaders and other school staff in placement schools, focused on inclusive practices.
  • Run funded Chartered Teacher, Chartered Teacher (Leadership) and Chartered Teacher (Mentor) cohorts for ethnic minority teachers with an interest in a career in teacher education.

“I’m delighted that Mission 44 is launching the first partnerships from our Diversity in Education Fund, to tackle the systemic barriers that teachers from ethnic minority backgrounds face at the recruitment and selection stage. Alongside six brilliant organisations, we hope this work will highlight real solutions that can be adopted across the teacher recruitment sector, to ensure our teaching workforce is representative of the diverse student population it serves.”

This partnership will include a spotlight on the career changer market and:

  • Create a working group as a vehicle to build anti-racist expertise and mindsets.
  • Launch a pilot campaign to attract ethnically diverse career changers in the West Midlands, supporting them through the recruitment process through training, and increasing retention through long-term support; and then capturing and amplifying learnings to embed in the wider sector and NIOT’s approaches.
  • Embed anti-racism into the ITT curriculum across NIOT’s network, training over 1,400 new teachers, through developing new, expert-informed content and equipping all teacher-trainers with the confidence to deliver it.

“Increasing diversity in the teaching profession is vital and requires us to challenge the barriers faced by new teachers from ethnic minority backgrounds. I’m delighted that, along with the Chiltern Learning Trust and Being Luminary, we can bring together expertise in professional development, supporting providers to address the systemic issues that lead to unequal treatment.” – Dame Alison Peacock, CEO, Chartered College of Teaching

Their key focus is bringing in career changers who would not have become teachers otherwise and helping them stay in schools for the long term. Mid-life career changers bring high-value skills and experiences into schools, but research shows they have distinct needs too, with many leaving teaching too early. Now Teach’s support helps them become teachers and then stay in teaching for the long term.
